Background

For this project I was tasked with planning, designing, and developing a series of 4 e-Learning modules that would introduce 8 new menu items for the IHOP x Wonka Campaign. The modules were designed to provide the restaurant team members an overview of the campaign, how to execute or "build" the new menu items, and how to prepare an IHOP 'N GO (To-Go) order.

One of the largest constraints stipulated by all stakeholders (franchisees, leadership, and restaurant team members) is that the modules need to be as short as possible. This is due to the fact that restaurant team members do not have a lot of free time during their shifts and every moment matters. With this in mind, it was determined that the best course of action was to implement quick training videos (less than 1 min.) along with a streamlined e-Learning experience.

Planning

For the planning phase, the Instructional Design team (Manager, Instructional Design; Director, Learning & Development; and Instructional Designer) collaborated on creating a scope of work to formalize the training deliverables for this Campaign.

First, the team reviewed all of the Line & Prep Recipes (9 total) for the menu items in the Wonka Campaign and the following training deliverables were required:

  • 9 Training Recipes
  • 2 Build Charts (job aids) - for beverages and food items
  • 9 Training Videos
  • 2 e-Learning Modules (w/ Training Videos)
  • 1 Campaign Rollout Guide

My role in this project as an Instructional Designer was to design and develop the training videos and e-Learning modules.

Once the deliverables were decided upon, I started my planning process by identifying any changes in behavior for restaurant team members. Some of the changes in behavior included adding a color mix-in to the pancake batter, rolling a beverage glass in icing, placing cotton candy on top of a beverage, and making deep-fried crispy hash browns.

Design & Development

Once I had identified the major changes of behavior, I began work on designing and developing outlines for the training videos and e-Learning courses.

Training Videos

  • The strategy determined by L&D leadership is to have learners receive the majority of their digital training through the training videos, but they also need to be extremely short to account for the end-users' busy schedules in the restaurants. The videos would then be embedded into the e-Learning courses to deliver the training.
  • To account for this, I designed the training videos to be short-form videos to provide the information the end-users need to successfully execute the menu items.
  • To create the storyboards, I reviewed the Prep and Line Recipes to determine what information is critical for the end-users and what information is "nice to know."
  • Once the storyboards were completed, I sent them to the L&D team to review and provide feedback to iterate on the design.
  • After the storyboards had been finalized our team scheduled time in the IHOP Test Kitchen to capture the video footage we needed for the training videos.
  • Once the video footage has been captured, I began work on editing the videos and working with the L&D team and cross-functional partners for final sign-off.

eLearning Courses

  • The department strategy surrounding the e-Learning modules is to use the e-Learning to house the training videos and deliver any additional Critical Control Points strategy through the modules.
  • Some of the additional Control Points included how to package To-Go orders, talking points for servers, etc.
  • For the assessment portion of the e-Learning, I designed a separate module in Articulate Storyline for easier tracking with the company's LMS (Docebo).
  • Once the storyboards had been completed and signed off by the L&D team, I began work on developing the courses in Articulate Storyline.
