For this eLearning module I was given a fellow student's storyboards to develop. As part of the project the developer was not allowed to know who developed the storyboards and was only allowed to develop the module as indicated by the storyboards.
Target Audience: Novice Gardeners
Responsibilities: Developer
Tools Used: Adobe Captivate, Google Drive, & Google Slides
Year: 2020
For this project, I was given storyboards that were developed by another student and was asked to develop the e-Learning module as specified by the storyboards. If anything was missing from the storyboards (i.e. font sizes, positive/negative assessment feedback) I was not allowed to include it the final product.
The first step I took in the development process was to examine all of the storyboards to get a sense of the flow of the completed module, the types of interactions the designer intended, and the assets that were provided. Once I had completed my initial review of the documents I was provided, I began the developing the module. First, I started by placing all of the written content and assets on their respective slides. After I had completed the slides with the content on them, I moved on to including all of the interactions as they were specified on the storyboards I was provided.
Overall, the development of this module went relatively smoothly, but as I began development I noticed some issues with the storyboard I was provided. For example, the font color specified on the title screen was a Forest Green that was overlaid on an image of a garden which made it difficult for the user to clearly see the title of the e-Learning module. Another issue I ran into was that once the user completes one of the two sections in the module the user is not routed back to the main menu to complete the second section of the module. Unfortunately, per the assignment's directions, I wasn't allowed to make any changes when developing this module. The module had to be designed as it was laid out in the storyboards.
This project proved to be an excellent opportunity to further develop my skills with Adobe Captivate and helped me recognize the information that is needed in storyboards to ensure the final product is developed as envisioned. Furthermore, this assignment really drove home the importance of collaboration as an instructional designer. It also highlighted that without the ability to go back and forth with either SMEs or other instructional designers, it can be limiting to the success of a given product.
