Restaurant Program Guide

The Learning and Development department for this restaurant group needed to update their training materials for the To-Go program that was first introduced in 2020. One of the main problems that the team was trying to solve was menu items and garnishes being missing from guest orders. 

To kick of this project, I started by reviewing all of the training materials available for the To-Go Program. The existing materials available were as follows: program guide, 2-3 training videos, 1 job aid in the form of a packaging guide. 

Once I had audited the training materials, I worked on developing an outline of the training materials that would need to be updated and what would need to be created from scratch. One of the materials that I worked on was this program guide. 

To kickstart the design/development of the program guide, I requested the SMEs to review the guide to determine what was still accurate and what was out of date. After meeting with the SMEs, it was determined that a majority of the content was out of date and would need to be completely rewritten. In addition, the original source file for the previous program guide was missing. For these reasons, I determined it was best to completely rebuild the program guide from the ground up using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator (for graphics). 

To get started with rebuilding the program guide I consulted the (very dense) SOP Manual to determine what the standard procedures are for the To-Go program and then consulted with SMEs to confirm that all the information was aligned with what is being done in the restaurants. From there I created began outlining and writing the content in Microsoft Word and reviewing the material with all SMEs. Once the content had been signed off, I worked on creating the layouts in InDesign and then added the content for final sign-off from SMEs and L&D leadership.
